Dear Sirs:


As a citizen of Taiwan, I feel obliged to invite your attention to the following facts：
• Taiwan's 21 million people is greater than that of three-quarters of the countries in the United Nations.
• Taiwan is an economic powerhouse with the world's 9th largest export and import record, and made the world's 12th largest amount of outbound investments in 1994.
• It is a model for emerging democracies as, among other things, its first democratically elected president took office in May 1996.


Despite the above, Taiwan remains excluded from the United Nations due mainly to the flagrant exercise in intimidation and the flexing of raw political muscle by the People's Republic of China.

Recognizing that this cannot be justified in terms of international law as Taiwan more than meets the traditional criteria of statehood, I am writing to urge you to support Taiwan's bid for U.N. membership.

身為台灣島上居民的一份子，我有義務提醒您以下有關台灣的 一些事實：

• 台灣人口二千一百萬，高於四分之三的聯合國會員國。
• 經濟成長成績耀眼，1994年對外貿易總額居世界第九位，對外 投資總額居世界第十二位；
• 政治體系逐漸民主，於1996年五月產生第一位民選總統。

因此，台灣迄今仍因中國的反對而被排除在聯合國之外，乃是 一件漠視現實且極端悖離公平正義的行為，本人基於個人的認知， 特別在此聲明懇切呼籲，身為自由世界領袖的您，能支持台灣加入 聯合國。
