Dear Sirs:
As a citizen of Taiwan, I feel obliged to invite your attention to
the following facts:
- Taiwan's 21 million people is greater than that of three-quarters
of the countries in the United Nations.
- Taiwan is an economic powerhouse with the world's 9th largest
export and import record, and made the world's 12th largest amount
of outbound investments in 1994.
- It is a model for emerging democracies as, among other things,
its first democratically elected president took office in May 1996.
Despite the above, Taiwan remains excluded from the United Nations due mainly to the flagrant exercise
in intimidation and the flexing of raw political muscle by the People's Republic of China.
Recognizing that this cannot be justified in terms of international law as Taiwan more than meets the traditional
criteria of statehood, I am writing to urge you to support Taiwan's bid for U.N. membership.
Best wishes,
Sincerely yours,
